Incoming Kitchen Floor!

Well, after a few months on a rather drab floor (and one room even has the subfloor exposed) we're ready to push forward to get our floor installed. After meeting with a tile installer and being happy with the bid, we've scheduled the work for Tuesday. Be sure to check back for more pictures. Hopefully, we'll be able to roll right into the laminate floor installation in the other rooms! Below you will see the "Before" pictures along with a sample of the tile we've chosen.

A Big Weekend

So, New Years is here and we've got quite a plan (It is a wonder that I laughed a few years back when I saw Old School and the newly married Frank is laughed at by the college kids at the party because he won't drink as a result of his "big plans" which involved going to the Home Depot).

Here is the rundown -
Friday we're both off from work so we're going to lunch with relatives.
Friday evening we're meeting a friend of mine for dinner who is up from Hawaii
Saturday we have plans to go to the Home Depot to purchase a range hood fan with our gift card.
Finally, Sunday we'll go to church and spend time with family and friends until Monday when we'll rest after the whole New Year celebration.

The mortgage is paid today and nothing has broken(yet) so I think we're in good shape.

Time Lapsed Snow Melting

The snow that surprised us this morning melts away while I was at work.

Snow, again!

I woke up this morning - got dressed - made an omelet...I was almost ready to leave when my wife woke up and said, "Holy crap, it snowed!"

I was completely oblivious! So for now, its work from home until some melts. Thank goodness for remote access!

Merry Christmas

I can only hope folks out there are as blessed as I feel. Waking up with a beautiful wife - the smell of Christmas morning omelets - the relaxing feeling of just lounging around. With that said, Merry Christmas everyone!

Wii are out of luck

Objective: Obtain a Nintendo Wii
Location: BestBuy
Intelligence: BestBuy will be receiving at least 40 Wii's. Those in line by 7 am will get a voucher for a Wii.

Mission Report: At 0545, awoke to cold. Dressed and left beautiful wife to set out in search of this "mission impossible" item. Arrived at 5:50. There were over 50 people in line already. After trying to stay warm talking to others in line, the time passed slowly. Reports from the cell phones said that nearby Target, Gamestop, and EB Games also had hundreds in line. At approximately 7:10 the line dispersed. We were confused and in awe, until we heard the grumbles louder and louder: BestBuy only had 21 Wii's. The other 100 of us would have to go home empty handed. The manager, who was in the store since 5 AM, waited 2 hours to come out and tell us the number he had in stock. Common courtesy would have dictated he come tell us before we freeze our buns off!

Not cool!

Arg. So about 15 minutes after I posted on Thursday the power went out and did not come back on until nearly 4:00 PM on today (Saturday). In addition to that, a life crippling event occurred in the middle of all that: I woke up Friday morning to broken glasses!

I've since mocked up a temporary pair using a similar frame, however, it isn't perfect. To top off the most perfect weekend, I've got a power bill waiting for me that is $167 more than I've ever paid before (it is over $200). Ugh!

Wind, rain, weather!

Some of the trees outside look like this right now (and I'm referring to the one that is bent/fallen at 45+ degrees)! It is pretty amazing to stay up and watch some of this wacky weather. This being a homeowner stuff makes you nervous when you look outside and see your poor shop building or garage next to these trees that you just know could break at any moment.

I'm also surprised the internet and TV went out before the power. I don't recall a time in recent years that it has been the case.

Sick!

Well, I got the tree up last night...but today I'm home sick. I haven't felt well for over a week. I think it is some sort of light touch of the flu or maybe just stress as I have been feeling nauseated for almost a full week. Hopefully I'll be feeling better by this weekend. I want to go to Home Depot and get a stove hood and install it.

Poison

Well, enter the feeling of being trapped. Now that we have a large mortgage payment, it is a lot harder and scarier to think about changing jobs. Meanwhile, I know there are influences in my current environment that are like a poison and are wearing on me. I was recently moved to another position against my wishes and am now spending my days not doing what I love, but educating others on the meaning of the word "screen" and "monitor" in relationship to computer technology.

:(

Holidays

We will reuse this tree this year. How great the set up is!

Late Start

I must say, I had some grand plans for today: Pick up / recycle some of the stuff around the house the previous owner left, cut up the tree that fell last week, change the oil in the car, fix some computers...but its 1:30 and I'm just now going to get in the shower. I think I'll at least get the oil changed...hopefully.

Morning Snow

There is almost nothing more relaxing for me than waking up with a cup of hot chocolate, eating some oat meal, then looking out on the wonderful snow blanket that has been undisturbed in the morning hours. Wonderful. God is great.

Snow!

After wrapping the external pipes, we've begun to get more snow here!

Quick note,

I've added a link on the right there for Picasa, a free photo editing tool from Google. It is very handy and helpful working with photos. Download it and give it a try!

Timber!

I awoke today to see a startling sight: Our 45 year old redwood tree out back had a large portion felled from the wind. Thank goodness it was the opposite direction from the house! I have a feeling we'll be having this tree removed for fear of potential damage.

Septic System Awry

In a startling fashion, I was alerted to a problem with the septic system the other day when I heard a very frightening, "Glug, glug, glug" from the toilet after a flush. Curious to know whether or not something had become lodged in the toilet, I waited for the toilet to settle then decided to test flush to see how bad the blockage was. To my dismay, the toilet began to overflow!

I frantically dried up the water and tried to stop it. After the water level went down a bit, I broke out the plunger. I began to vigorously plunge, until there was nearly no water left in the bowl. I put the plunger aside in the bath tub (as to not disturb my newly dried floor)...when I noticed a fowl inch of water in the tub. Oh no!

At 9:45 at night the toilet has backed up into the tub! I desperately sought immediate assistance from Google's search engine and anyone who was on Google Talk at the time. A friend and colleague of mine indicated that many clogs occur at the "T" in the septic system intake from the house when it is a main line clog. I began to dig to uncover the access point, but I could not find it. I gave up at 11:30 PM and went to bed.

The next day I was able to enlist my neighbor to my cause. We sent a garden hose down the clean out underneath the house, but hit a blockage "hard as rock". We then found the access, but couldn't see the blockage, so we popped open the manhole. We still couldn't see the blockage, so I got my camera (ewww, right?...don't worry the smell was the worst part).

After lowering the camera down in, we rotated the screen to get a look at what we were dealing with. After concluding the cement pipe did not cave in, we took a 4' metal pipe I had laying around and inserted it to break up the blockage. Once we finished a bit of mushing, my neighbor graciously went back under the house and ran the garden hose down and we flushed out the remaining debris.

The best part? I just saved a ton of money by switching my car ins..plumbing service to "DIY" (Do it yourself).

Introduction

Welcome to Musings of a Puyallup Homeowner. My name is Preston Gallwas, a new homeowner in the Puyallup area of Washington State. I decided to create this blog to share my thoughts, trials, and happenings at my new home as my wife and I try to make a house into a home.

I am currently 20 years old. We purchased our home September 28th, 2006. Being an older home, we knew we'd have to do some work to get it ready. We knew from the onset that we'd want the electrical system in the house completely rewired, some rooms painted, and old carpet removed before we moved in. As a result, we moved in near the beginning of November.

After a few interesting 'bumps' as a homeowner, I decided to start this blog to share some of the experiences from someone who was raised in apartments all his life. I hope to make my story interesting for anyone who cares to follow it.
